I wanted to point you to a very profitable discussion going on on Metafilter right now.

I bought Borderlands on Wednesday after much soul-searching (I didn’t finish Fallout 3, which is in a similar market segment, probably because it was too creepy). Fallout 3 is Role Playing Game that is also a First Person Shooter. In contrast, Borderlands is a First Person Shooter that is also a Role Playing Game.

This is a post composed of old news and links that are new to me, but from earlier in 2009. I encountered it today by way of a train crash type of Metafilter post about the new iPhone app from Pepsi that helps you “score” with women.
But the discussion that’s completely tangential in that thread about genius, creativity and getting started is one that I thought might help some folks close to me, and folks not so close.

So I am, as you know, half-Chinese (, Bob). I am something of a foodie, and so it took me by surprise that I had never heard of this kind of candy. Bear brought me some on a visit last week.

The old XBox is repaired and in its new home, I got a lovely note from the new recipients (thank you) and is apparently doing well.

I thought I should just drop a note and say I’m not dead. I am in fact 41 (so far for 10 days). Which is not dead, though some young whippersnappers (yes, I feel entitled to use that phrase now) seem to think so. I got news for ya, sunny Jim! ::shaking fist::
Yes, as the days wax on, I get more and more uppity as well as old (Thank you, A, E, M-K et al.).

As may or may not be explicitly clear to anyone who reads this blog, I took a voluntary leave of absence from writing about power disparity issues (primarily racism) on this blog in the Spring of 2009, and that will remain until at least the Fall of 2009, if not later.
To support my pledge to take and keep that leave of absence, I also created a new blog/web space called Master of the Hidden Cottage, where I am ostensibly more formal writing articles (and indeed have the seeds of some forming now) that will attempt to meld what I’m learning from Taoism with every day life topics including racism. I’ll try to do that sort of writing there from now on.
Anyhow, I wanted to note that even though I won’t be contributing to the week of blogging, I heartily encourage anyone else who reads this post to do so. It can be fun and educational and interesting to focus on a theme while blogging, and this is certainly a worthy theme.
You can find more information on how to participate in the ibarw LiveJournal community.

Just catalogued my dealings with computers from as far back as I could reasonably remember (from the point of view of participating in computer-moderated/computer-hosted communities) on MetaFilter.
An interesting trip down memory sewer. Even came up with an old phone number I’d had but forgotten.
Update: Of course I forgot Livejournal.

I created a profile and populated my library with artists from our CD/MP3 collection.
Been tinkering around with the site and listening to music as I have time at my desk since yesterday. It’s interesting and entertaining, and I sometimes like music to play in the background as I work.
I also added a link to my last.fm profile on my Google Profile.

Found this interesting presentation (PowerPoint) on Google about my Chinese/Taishanese family history. Apparently we’re descended from royal potters (which would explain why the name is actually a combination of three radicals: west, earth and tile).
Here’s a copy embedded from Google Docs:

This post is entirely unsafe for work, or for innocent eyes. But since I am off of work today, this being the every other Friday I get off for working 9 hours (usually 10 or 11) a day, I don’t feel so badly about posting it during working hours.
